A little corner of Colombia on Clairmont Road sits in front of an old house that was last an auto shop run by a mechanic named Julio. It’s on the Brookhaven side of Clairmont Road, which marks the boundary between the cities of Brookhaven and Chamblee and the Brookhaven neighborhood of Ashford Park.
Julio has since decamped to Gwinnett County, just as many immigrants and refugees who first arrived in the Buford Hwy area have since moved farther out, to Gwinnett or North Fulton and Forsyth, in search of better schools, larger homes, and cheaper rent, both residential and commercial.
What signs remain that they were once here, that this was once home or a place of business, that this place was theirs? What do we not see, that would change our hearts and minds about place, about people, and about who we are? Which streets divide us? Which ones connect us? Which places signal to us, “you are welcome here,” and which do not?

Buford Highway? Look again.
If you’ve ever wondered why our streets look like this, they were designed this way, prioritized to move cars quickly and “efficiently,” rather than serve the needs of people. They were designed—through the union of policy and new technology, blessed by capital—to facilitate white flight and suburbanization, and, instead of connecting us to each other, to deepen and systematize the divisions.
Yet. Immigrants and refugees have begun new lives, raised families, built businesses and empires, established new communities, developed new economies, and created a way out of no way on streets just like this one throughout the country.
Now, as we find ourselves on the cusp of a new transportation revolution, how will we respond? As we explore new advances in mobility, will we continue to find—and fund—“projects” that divide us further from one another, degrade our humanity, and destroy our environment?
Thanks to Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition—and to your leaders and staff—for bringing so many advocates and activists for equity, transportation equity, racial justice, and social justice together these past few days in Nashville. Thanks for inviting us and supporting our work and providing the opportunity to meet so many others around the country doing and growing this important work. Thanks to Zahra Alabanza of Red, Bike, and Green, Timberley Jones of Spokes Digital Media, Jeffrey Nolish, and Nedra Deadwyler for everything you do and letting us join with you.
In the words of Nedra Deadwyler, Founder and Principal of Civil Bikes: “Our communities are being impacted by design, development, and policies that are rooted in white supremacy. We demand equity rooted in justice to become the norm. We invite others to join us in the journey. Thank you #Intersections2018 for the opportunity to take the stage and speak. Give voice to the pain and find health and healing.” #smartgrowthamerica #completestreets #nashville #nolensvillepike #bufordhighway #bufordhwy #lovebufordhighway #welovebuhi

Meet David Yu, our first Hero, who arrived in the United States in 1974 from Taiwan. David is one of the founders of the first Asian bank on Buford Highway—Summit Bank—that provided countless loans to immigrant entrepreneurs and small business owners, a 1996 Olympics torchbearer, and a frequent marathoner in retirement!
From our Master Storyteller and Project Architect Gina Yu, a statement on why we chose “Heroes” to describe our narrators and interviewees and “Listeners” to describe our interviewers:
At the beginning of our Oral History project, we imagined two people, one interviewer and one narrator, having a conversation about the narrator’s life and story. But looking at those words, something felt lacking. Something was missing from the structure of it all.
More than a conversation, we want these interviews to be all about these people who have lived and worked on Buford Highway. We want to affirm the power and humanity of their stories. Because, they are the point of this project.
They are the heroes. We are simply the vessels for their narratives to be shared.
That is why our interviewers will be called the listeners. Because, that is their job—to listen.
Our goal for the Oral History Project is not to guess or assume the stories of the people we look to, but we aim to create space for our heroes to share a glimpse of their lives. We follow them into their narratives.
Because they are the heroes of their own journeys, not us.
Buford Highway is so much more than tacos and pho. It’s more than the “diverse” region of Atlanta. It’s much much more than exotic ingredients and “cheap eats.” It’s a community of humans that have existed, long before any of us took notice. We want to preserve and highlight this, with and for Buford Highway past, present, and future.
We hope that we can continue to honor these people, and connect the humanity within and surrounding the area.

We're so excited to launch Heroes of Buford Highway today with our first official RECORDED interview. We Love BuHi began as an Instagram account documenting the people, places, and plates of Buford Highway, including innumerable informal conversations with the people who shaped, and continue to shape, the transformation of this corridor into the community of immigrants it is today. To finally begin to record their stories and experiences is to return to our roots and to enter fully into the heart of who we are.
The term “oral history project” here is a bit of a misnomer, because the purpose of this endeavor is not to collect memories of the past for historical record, and to limit this undertaking to a “project” undermines our desire to build, without terminus, intercultural connection, empathy, understanding, community, and power. We believe that that this effort must be based in and for a place, and that its purpose must be to serve, succor, support, and strengthen primarily and directly the people who choose to share their stories, more so than institutions located outside of Buford Highway and their audiences.
We’re grateful for the deep dedication and exhaustive expertise of our partners at the Georgia State University Library Special Collections and Archives, Social Change Collection, and the Asian American Journalists Association of Atlanta. Thanks to the DeKalb County Library and The Globe Hub coworking space for generously providing interview locations. And thanks to our long-time friend and benefactor Tres Crow for underwriting our first set of audio recording equipment!
We especially want to recognize the commitment and contributions of our Master Storyteller and Project Architect Gina Yu and Project Coordinator Seam Park for opening your hearts and making space for this project from a deep personal connection to this place. You believe your parents are the Heroes of Buford Highway. We believe that they are; we believe you are too.

We affirm the right of every child to grow up safe from harm, to be loved, to imagine, play, and explore the world around them, so that they can be equipped and empowered to change our world for good.
We're so excited to announce that we've been awarded a grant from KaBOOM! and Target for The BuHi Lanterns, a temporary light installation on the Buford Highway corridor, that will accomplish the following objectives: • encourage play in unexpected everyday spaces
• reflect the area's cultural diversity
• create a safer and more playful and people-friendly environment
• encourage residents and visitors to explore new places
In order to bring play for everyone to ordinary places, to support an environment for public art throughout Buford Highway, to make this project happen, we really need your support. That's why we're asking you to click the link in profile and take 2 minutes to send a letter of support to local officials and staff in Doraville on the project's behalf. Together, let's create a world of love, light, beauty, and play for our kids.
Thank you! (Renderings by @iyer.a.genius)

After 22 years away from the restaurant industry, Mirtha Diaz resurfaces with her traditional Cuban cuisine that she shared with atlanta for almost 15 years. The Original location was Morro Castle from 1981 to 1995 located in mid town atlanta, forced to close due to the Olympic games and the property was sold. Her husband was going thru cancer at the time it seemed pointless to reopen their passion for this cuisine without her partner.
Needless to say he did not survive and there hasn’t really been a need to share the tradition with anyone else but family until now. 22 years later Mirtha has decided to give it another chance and try to share her passion and home cooked meals and sandwiches with atlanta. Please join us at our new location named Cuba Mia located at 3979 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta GA 30345.

Palabok, or pancit palabok, makes for some great #MondayMotivation. Palabok is a Filipino dish featuring rice noodles, pork, shrimp, fish flakes, pork rind, eggs, and green onion, and can be found in the prepared foods case at New Manila Mart. If you're starving 🙋🏻♀️ and want to eat it on the spot, the clerk is happy to heat it for you. And, of course, #treatyourself to some some halo-halo afterward!! We believe in fostering and advocating for equitable and sustainable community development along the Buford Highway corridor. We advocate for recognizing immigrant-owned businesses as community assets and engines of economic resilience, building on and strengthening the social capital and networks of immigrant communities, and integrating public engagement into local and regional planning and decision-making.

👏👊💪✊💗🙏 to all the women who make up We Love BuHi’s heart and soul and power us to the places we want to go. 💕 especially to our new Master Storyteller and Project Architect Gina Yu, who grew up on Buford Hwy as the daughter of Buford Hwy business owners and regularly helps out at her parents’ store. An erstwhile journalist, now marketing and branding strategist, and always storyteller, she first helped us define and rebrand who we are as a member of @wearecuz in 2016/2017. Now she’s helping us refine our #oralhistory project and develop our volunteers through #friendsofwelovebuhi.
If you want to get involved in our projects this year, please email her at email@example.com or join our Friends Facebook group [link in profile]. We can’t wait to meet you!
