What if MARTA Bus 39 was a vehicle for cultural connectivity, an arts center that moved?

Meet Angie, the newest member of our team! She's a recent graduate of Georgia State and has a degree in journalism and marketing. Angie grew up on Buford Highway and comes from a Mexican heritage. She joined We Love Buhi to make a difference in her community. "I have many fond memories of BuHi and feel that it's a community that is underappreciated. Many people know the area for the food, but for me it's the immigrants within it that make it special. I want to help keep that diversity alive." Angie will be helping with our marketing and public relations efforts. #welovebuhi #buhi #bufordhighway
“小兒科” means pediatrics.
Love is ensuring that every child has a healthy and safe place to live, to learn, to love and feel loved, to play, to experience joy and absorb beauty, to imagine, to grow, and to succeed.
We are committed to projects that will help support these outcomes on Buford Highway. We are excited to share some big news soon about one particular project, an opportunity for which we are beyond grateful to our partners, collaborators, funders, and volunteers.
What does loving the community in which you live, grew up, or to which you always return, mean? We certainly don’t have all the answers, or even the right questions sometimes, but we are dedicated to learning with you and from you. Thank you for helping us see and understand and for joining us on this journey. Thank you your support.
With love and gratitude, WLB

We moved to Buford Highway when my sons were 2 and 4 years old. Because I am an indifferent cook, and because I gravitated toward the Chinese restaurants we‘d infrequently patronized while I was married, my sons’ awareness of their ethnic and cultural roots gradually transitioned from outright disavowal to appreciating that, because they are half-Chinese, my parents send them money for Chinese New Year and on their birthdays.
Eventually, I hope they will recognize that their heritage not only includes red envelopes, pot stickers, pork floss, pan-fried noodles, and Jeremy Lin, but also the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Angel Island, the murder of Vincent Chin, the myth of the model minority, and the small daily injustices that can be momentarily dismissed but are cumulatively damaging and corrosive.
In Atlanta, more than anywhere else I think, diversity and inclusion should not be mere numbers to count or boxes to check, or a banner unfurled that says “welcome” in 10 languages, but a willingness to stand side by side, and step aside too, so that what was promised can be claimed, and what is taken daily can be reclaimed.
This year, Chinese New Year falls on Friday, February 16. There will be red envelopes commemorating the Year of the Dog, which you can find here at Maomi Bookstore in Atlanta Chinatown Mall in Chamblee, and firecrackers and lion dancing and traditional crafts and great food both in the mall and at the Chinese Culture Center behind the mall.
This year, perhaps, I hope it means more than red envelopes to my sons, and to us all. - ML

#MondayMotivation to keep going. Thinking about the murals of Buford Highway, how it all started, and how far we’ve come. Now that the tenth mural has been completed, and the final drop of paint—of this first phase, at least—has dried, what do you think? What will we say 5 years from now? 15? 50?
“Conceptualized during an urban planning study for Buford Highway, the BuHi Walk is an innovative public art project that will create a safe and engaging pedestrian infrastructure within the sprawling shopping plazas and parking lots of this major transportation corridor. The BuHi Walk will connect the interior walkways and informal pedestrian routes within Buford Highway’s lots and parcels through an array of murals, sculptures, installations, and other concepts.
These concepts will be created by ten local and national artists of color following an immersive community engagement program. Project completion of The BuHi Walk will be marked by four days of public programming with the intent of celebrating Buford Highway's multicultural diversity.” #livingwallsatl #lwbuhi2017 #lovebufordhighway #bufordhighway #bufordhwy #Repost @robertosartwork
Mural for @livingwallsatl and @welovebuhi 2017 conference. A manifesto on human rights, immigrant rights and pro DACA. Work created with @createxcolors and @iwata_airbrush.
Thanks @pedsatlanta for awarding us with a Golden Shoe last night! We’re thrilled to be honored by Atlanta’s premier nonprofit advocating for pedestrian safety and to join an inspiring group of current and past awardees who are making communities throughout Georgia better, safer, more walkable places for people.
Thank you for focusing on Buford Highway and the safety of its residents for decades, much longer than we’ve been around, and, more recently, for teaching, supporting, and partnering with us on walking tours, bus crawls, and planning initiatives.
Clearly, there is a long way to go. We’re so glad to be on this journey—toward a healthy, safe, walkable, livable Buford Highway that remains unique, diverse, and vibrant—with PEDS and a community of colleagues, supporters, champions, and, best of all, friends.

Stuck in Monday morning traffic? Consider this. MARTA’s Bus Route 39 carries 6,000 passengers daily. In comparison, Buford Highway carries 20,000 single occupant vehicles every day (i.e., you driving by yourself, in your car). This means that nearly a quarter of all people traveling on Buford Highway USE THE BUS.
Now just imagine if all 6,000 of those people DROVE.
The key to transit usage is ensuring that transit is safe, reliable, convenient/frequent, and cost-effective. On Buford Highway, one of MARTA’s most popular routes, the buses come every 12 minutes during peak hours, so you never have to wait.
If you love Buford Highway, take the train. Ride the bus. And bring your friends. Get out of traffic, stop being traffic, and maintain Buford Highway’s high bus ridership counts so that Route 39 remains reliable and convenient for all of us.

If you’ve been to Hong Kong BBQ—樂口福—iin the past 11 years, you’ve met Francisco Cheung (pictured at left), a Chinese-American by way of Panama. An alumnus of Cross Keys High, Francisco immigrated to the United States in his teens in the early 2000s.
Here he is with Chef Tang, an immigrant from China who’s worked at the stall in the Chinatown food court in Chamblee for going on four years.

@yoyoferro’s mural for @livingwallsatl is finally going up at Cross Keys High School!! CK serves the students and families of the Buford Highway corridor in DeKalb County, all of which falls into one extremely long school district.
This mural, in the works since last summer, incorporates the blind contour portraits that CK art students drew after spending time with the artist, whose work may have caught your eye throughout Atlanta. If you look carefully, you’ll find Buford Highway has been drawn into the design as one of the black lines.
Thanks to @yoyoferro, @crosskeysart, @livingwallsatl, @dekalbschools, and the CK family for fostering, nurturing, and creating so much more beauty for this amazing community.

Two years ago, serendipity granted us an opportunity to sit down with and chat with the Hsias, longtime owners of Yen Jing Chinese Restaurant. We discussed Chinese-Korean cuisine, generational differences, and the importance of tradition. To date, this interview, the first and one of only a few we've ever recorded, holds a special and rare place in our hearts.
You may have noticed that, recently, but for a very long time, we have refrained from conducting interviews such as this one and, due to such hesitation, failed at an integral part of our mission—sharing the stories of Buford Highway. This failure is due in part because our organization doesn't—clearly—possess the dedicated technical capability or even the most rudimentary equipment to do so.
Mostly, though, this failure is due to the unexpected grace, power, and transcendence of this moment with the Hsias and the impact it had on us. Our conversation was so moving, so revelatory, that we felt we should continue this effort only if it was conducted with the deepest and utmost trust, respect, responsibility, honor, and love, as well as a clear and honest acknowledgment and understanding of the power of story, of storytelling, and their potential to create, build, reclaim, and transform people and places.
Two years later, we return to the beginning and are more awed than ever. Thank you for joining with us as we resume our Buford Highway oral history work to find truth and share beauty.

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me... Rosca de Reyes, tamales, and champurrado.
Visit any of the Latin bakeries on Buford Highway today, and you’ll likely see colorful boxes stacked sky-high, each containing different sizes of a ring-shaped bread called Rosca de Reyes. The Kings’ Ring is traditionally eaten by groups of relatives or close friends to celebrate Epiphany on January 6th, a Christian feast day commemorating the visit of the three magi to baby Jesus in the manger and the revelation of the Christ to the Gentiles.
Each Rosca de Reyes contains a plastic baby figurine symbolizing the infant Jesus, and whoever finds the figurine is responsible for treating the group to tamales and atole, a thick, hot, corn-based drink—champurrado is the chocolate version—at Candlemas on February 2nd. Some panaderias bake two baby figurines into their Roscas to divide tamale and atole duties.
Feliz Día de Reyes!

New year, new signage. What do you think of Asian Square’s new, streamlined, uniform, look?
Buford Highway is changing right before our eyes; now, more than ever, we are committed to understanding what was and strengthening what is, so that what Buford Highway becomes will still be recognizable and true, so that who we are becoming will still be... us.
In 2018, therefore, We Love BuHi is renewing our deep commitment to the people and places—and the occasional plates—of Buford Highway.
We’ve got some exciting plans with new collaborators in the works and can’t wait to share them with you. More details and announcements coming soon. #welovebuhi #lovebufordhighway
